I Can Not Get Paid by Medium but I Still Choose to Write Here
I’ll tell you “Why” in 4 points!
I am not eligible to get paid by Medium without any fault of mine and I’m not the only one.
For all those who don’t know Medium’s paying strategy, hear from the horse’s mouth:
“Medium pays authors by dividing up every individual subscriber’s fee between the different articles they’ve read that month. But rather than doing an even division between articles, Medium will weight payments toward whichever articles a subscriber gives the most claps to.”
Now, this option is available only for people who are a part of the “Medium Partner Program” and I can’t be a part of it since the Partner Program is not available in India, anymore.
I have taken up a 30-day writing challenge for myself on Medium, even after knowing I won’t be making a penny for them. This is my 24th story in this challenge and you know, writing is not a cakewalk, especially to a newbie.
It’s not like Medium is the only platform to write on, but I still chose it over others, why?
I have 4 reasons for it:
- Medium is my first and firsts are special
A colleague introduced me to Medium two years ago, to read some great articles. For a long time, I did not even know I could write on Medium. I was not big on reading at that time but I loved every story I read here and that got me hooked.
No clickbaity titles, originality of stories, are a rare find in the social media era. I was curious to provide the same value to people that I gained from reading various articles on this platform. It was then, I decided that whenever I would begin writing seriously, I’d begin with my first, Medium.
2. Flexibility to chose topics
The majority of Medium’s alternatives are restricted by a niche. You cannot write about anything & everything you would want to, which means limiting your imagination. I don’t believe in finding a niche when it comes to writing, my imagination knows no bounds, and nor does my writing.
Medium allows me the flexibility to pen down my thoughts about everything, from a unicorn to Mars.
3. Provides an opportunity to write for publications
Medium has a publication for every topic, which means you don’t need to look outside for getting your articles published professionally. It’s also easier to get through the procedure of these publications since they are always looking forward to writers on Medium for sharing their stories via them.
I can’t wait for getting my first story published in one of those publications.
4. A massive community
Medium has a community of over a million people, coming together from all around the world. People, here, have always been supportive of new writers by providing them with tips to sustain and succeed on Medium. It’s also easier to engage with people and connect to them beyond the walls of Medium.
With a community this big, we have better chances of more and more people reading our stories and that’s bigger than money.
When you have an established audience, it’s easier for them to follow your work regardless of the platform. So, if you start your personal blog tomorrow, you’d already have a community of readers to support you.
Community is power, it leads you to places you never thought of reaching. I’m here to build one such community of my own.
I don’t know, for how long I’d be able to continue writing but Medium will always remain an integral part of it, for it’s my first.
